3 outings with kids in Amsterdam

Museums are boring for kids? Not these three Amsterdam museums! Discover three fun attractions for kids in Amsterdam.

Amsterdam, being the Dutch capital, is almost an amusement park in its own. In the vibrant city centre there is always something to do. But not every Amsterdam attraction is suitable for children. The Vondelpark certainly is! A peaceful green oasis for young and old, right in the middle of the busy city. The ‘Vondeltuin’ is a wonderful place to catch your breath, with a playground for kids and a quality kitchen. Once you’ve recovered in the Vondelpark, it’s time to continue exploring! These kid-friendly attractions are fun for the whole family:

1. Artis Zoo

Artis is the oldest zoo in the Netherlands and was named best zoo in the Benelux in 2015! What better reason could there be to not miss this family attraction while visiting Amsterdam? It has 900 different species of animals to discover, right in the city centre. There is no way you would ever be bored, with the many animal enclosures, exhibits, feeding shows and playgrounds this zoo has to offer. The Planetarium is an extra absolutely worth it in Artis. The dome-shaped cinema broadcasts wonderful short films about animals and the universe for visitors aged 8 and up.Opened daily from 9am.

Science Center NEMO is a museum for curious people of all ages. By exploring and experiencing kids (including ‘big kids’) can learn about science. What sets NEMO apart from other museums, is the fact that here children are invited to touch and play with everything. For instance you can find out for yourself about the forces of nature, or perform your own tests in a real laboratory! NEMO is located next to the Amsterdam Central Station and is opened Tuesday through Sunday from 10am to 5.30pm.

3. EYE Amsterdam filmmuseum

EYE Amsterdam is a relatively new filmmuseum, but it has already claimed its place in Amsterdam’s skyline. Across the IJ river from Central Station, this futuristic building harbours the largest film library in the Netherlands. The permanent Panorama exhibition deals with the fascinating history of cinema and includes interactive installations. The whole family can star in a real movie! Every Sunday morning children aged 2 to 6 can enjoy Cinemini, which includes a film followed by experiments with light and shadow. There are also EYEwalk videotours available for children aged 7 to 12, and temporary exhibitions for all ages.
