Whether you’re a family who loves the water, or you fancy trying something new together, you’ll be excited by the wide choice of water sports available in Southampton. From sailing lessons so you can learn to Captain your own ship, to something more high speed, there are activities in the water to suit everyone.
As a major port city on the south coast, Southampton is the perfect place to enjoy water sports with the kids.
Family Sailing Holidays
Treat the family to the VIP treatment by chartering a skippered yacht offering sailings from Southampton. With a company like Clearwater Sailing you can enjoy exclusive use of a luxury cruising yacht. Small families can choose the option to share the space and book just the number of cabins they need. These sailing holidays are fully crewed and skippered, so you can enjoy a relaxed sailing around the Solent (the body of water between the Isle of Wight and mainland England) or even across the Channel to France. You’ll also have the opportunity to get involved with steering and adjusting the sails, which is a great way to add to the adventure for young wannabe sailors.
Learn to Sail
If you’ve always fancied being able to call yourself Captain of the ship, there are numerous Royal Yacht Association accredited courses available in Southampton. The Hamble School of Yachting specialises in RYA sailing courses and is one of the leading RYA sea schools in the UK. There are courses available from complete novice taster weekends through to the Fast Track Yachtmaster Professional Sail Training Course, and under 18s are welcomed on some courses when accompanied by an adult. The Hamble Sailing River Club also offers sailing courses suitable for children ages six and over.
Isle of Wight
Those who prefer not to spend all of their holiday on the water should consider a stay on the family friendly Isle of Wight. Ferry services across the Solent are regular and you can be in East Cowes with your car in under an hour, or without it in just 25 minutes. There’s plenty to do with the kids on the island, including medieval Carisbrooke Castle and Queen Victoria’s cherished Osborne House, both sure to appeal to little knights, princes and princesses. The Robin Hill Country Park comes complete with rides and nature attractions, and the Amazon World Zoo Park. And of course there are lots of brilliant beaches to discover too. Whether you go just for the day or plan to enjoy a longer stay, the Isle of Wight has a seaside charm that appeals to all ages.
High Speed Adventures
From its easy to find position in the Ocean Village Marina, Seadogz Southampton offers plenty of exciting high speed experiences that brave kids, and their grown-ups, will love. The extreme RIB (rapid inflatable boat) adventures include 60 minute Junior Taster rides which speed along the south coast with plenty of turns, jumping, donuts and wake riding along the way. Or you could ramp up the action even more with a 90 minute adrenalin packed adventure! For young explorers, the two hour RIB Treasure Hunt combines solving clues and riddles with racing along the Solent in a mission to find the hidden treasure. All Seadogz experiences are suitable for ages 8 and over, and there needs to be at least one adult on the boat – sorry parents, watching from dry land isn’t an option, you’re going to get a bit wet!
During the summer season there are several special events in Southampton that a boat can offer the best ringside seat for, from boat races and shows to nearby annual events like the Bournemouth Air Show. Booking your space on a boat will let you get as close as possible to what’s happening on or over the water, with a unique vantage point that you just can’t get on dry land.
