Weekend break in Glasgow

What to do on a weekend escape to Glasgow

Glasgow is the perfect place for a cultural city break, filled with museum-hunting, fine dining and, of course, plenty of relaxation.

There are so many things to do in Glasgow, you’ll be hard pressed to fit them all into a weekend break. However, a few days is a great starting point when it comes to exploring this vibrant Scottish city.
Mad for museums
Spend a day wandering around the best Glasgow museums. Start off at the world-famous Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, where you can see artwork from Dali, Van Gogh and Monet, as well as local Glasgow artists, Egyptian artefacts and real-life medieval armour. Then, head over to the Glasgow Science Centre for an interactive look at how space, the human body and modern day machinery work. In the afternoon, visit the new Riverside Museum and its large collection of vehicles, models and transport dating all the way back to Glasgow’s medieval roots. You can also take a tour on the Glenlee, a tall ship built in 1896 and one of the only Clyde-built sailing ships still afloat today. It’s probably best to do your museum-hopping first up though as many galleries are closed on Sundays.
Credit cards at the ready
After a day of cultural sights, it’s time to splash some cash. Glasgow is a shopaholic’s dream with the city centre made up of pedestrianised shopping streets. You only need to know three names: Argyle Street, Buchanan Street and Sauchiehall Street, otherwise known as ‘the Golden Z’. From these streets, you can meander through gorgeous galleries, Art Nouveau arcades and luxury shopping malls. Glasgow is Britain’s second best shopping destination behind London, so you can expect to spend at least a day browsing designer fashion and fine jewellery stores, as well as Glasgow’s top-rated music shops for vintage records and band memorabilia.
Time to relax
After all that heavy shopping, it’s time to relax. There are plenty of Glasgow hotels with spas where you can sit back and soak away any stress from the week. The four-star Novotel Hotel in Glasgow Centre is located just a few hundred metres from all the popular Sauchiehall Street restaurants and bars, and has a lovely guest wellness centre with a sauna and steam room for the ultimate pamper package. Mums and dads can also have some time to themselves at this family-friendly hotel with a video game play area and special kids’ menu for the little ones.
Get back to nature
For your last day, spend some time at any one of Glasgow’s large city parks. Kelvingrove Park (which is also where you’ll find the Kelvingrove Musuem) is a large green space of 34 hectares, and home to local foxes, otters and birds. The River Kelvin runs right through the centre and is a popular spot for cyclists, runners and birdwatchers. On sunny days, it can get crowded with students from the nearby University of Glasgow, so if you’re looking for something a bit quieter, try the Botanic Gardens with its tropical and temperate plant collections from around the world. The Glasgow Green is also worth checking out as there are often city concerts and events held here throughout the year.
See a show
Finally, if you’ve got any energy and time left, make sure you catch a show. Glasgow is renowned for its music scene and there’s sure to be something to suit every musical taste. Classical fans should get tickets to the Royal Scottish National Orchestra at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall. If you like contemporary music and dance, there’s the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, plus theatre and ballet at the Theatre Royal.
