Budapest

Budapest certainly deserves its description ‘the Pearl of the Danube’ as each visit uncovers more delightful treats for the eye. The river that separates the city into two different areas, Buda and Pest, is a symbol as well as a landmark. From its banks you can admire some of the city’s most beautiful buildings, such as the Parliament, the Bridge of Chains, the Liberty Statue and the Royal Palace. Much more than a collection of historical quarters and hot springs, Budapest is a thriving city which will delight young and old alike.

Kids’voyage’s special treats

Children’s Railway
Trains have always fascinated young and old alike, but this one is unique: the train is driven, controlled and announced by children from 10 to 14 years old! Tickets are bought from a child cashier and the conductor is…a child. The train goes from Mount Szechenyi to Mount Huvosvolgy. It’s the ideal means of transport before a trip to the surrounding mountains. A great way to spend a day!
1021 Budapest – Huvosvolgy – Tel: (+36) 1 397 5392
Open every day, with trains usually running from 9am to 5 pm (ring for timetables)

Varosliget Park and Zoo
This park is extremely relaxing and situated close to many tourist attractions such as the Szechenvi Baths, Heroes Square or the Vajdahunyad Castle – which seems to have come directly from a Disney cartoon. On one part of the lake you can sail remote-controlled boats for a small charge. The zoo with its spectacular entrance is also a must for visitors.
Hosok Tere – Tel: (+36) 1 322 4098
Open every day

Millenáris Park
Millenáris Park is a modern cultural centre which contains the House of the Future and the Palace of Miracles. This clever combination of a museum and a schoolyard explores natural and scientific phenomena in an interactive and entertaining way. For instance, in what way are music and maths linked? And would you rather go on a monocycle or a moonwalk?
16-20 Kis Rókus – Tel: (+36) 1 336 4000
Open Tuesday to Friday, from 9am to 6pm; Saturdays from 10am to 9pm; and Sundays from 10am to 7pm

Museums and exhibitions

The Royal Palace
A trip on a funicular railway is always great fun, but this one also lets you see Budapest from on high and spot the main monuments. Once at the Palace, information from the Budapest History Museum on the façades and statues will tell you all you need to know. The Palace district is a real must-see area.
1 Budavári Palota – Tel: (+36) 1 487 8800
Open every day from 1st March to 31st October, from 10am to 6pm, except Tuesdays (open on Tuesdays from 15th May to 15h September)

Cruises on the Danube
After a pleasant day’s sightseeing, what could be more peaceful than a cruise on a riverboat? Cruising the Danube is also an ideal way to discover and understand the history of Budapest, especially at night when the illuminated buildings provide a superb light-show.
Departures from the river stations in the city centre of Budapest

The Park and its statues
This unique park now contains the giant statues from the communist era which a few years ago stood in the middle of the streets of Budapest. As well as being impressive in themselves, they also give an insight beyond the Iron Curtain.
Balatoni ut road at the corner of Szabadkai ut street – Tel: (+36) 1 424 7500
Open every day from 10am till sunset

Open every day from 9am to 11pm

Gerbeaud’s
