Sydney Tower
After just over 40 seconds in a lift, you’ll be 305 metres up on the panoramic floor of Sydney Tower with its breathtaking views: a 360° panorama of the bay, the various quarters of the city and, weather permitting, the Blue Mountains to the west. As a bonus, young and old will love Oztrek, a virtual reality ride through Australia’s treasures. Hold on to your seats!

Luna Park
Located on the ocean shore, Luna Park is a funfair with countless rides and sideshows. The entrance itself will put you in a perfect carnival mood as you pass through the mouth of a character straight out of a cartoon. Once inside, it’ll be hard to choose between the big wheel, the carousels, the ghost train, the dodgems… Hours of thrills and fun for both children and grown-ups.

The Opera House – backstage tour
The one defining symbol of the city, with its roof resembling either giant sails or sea-shells depending on your imagination, Sydney’s Opera House is a cultural site which features on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Children love the behind-the-scenes atmosphere when they visit ‘the wings’ and share in the secrets of this area usually reserved for the stars. Get up early: tours only ‘depart’ in the morning, from 7am.

Museums and exhibitions

National Maritime Museum
This wonderful free museum analyses the close relationship that Sydney has always had with the sea. From aboriginal navigation techniques to the arrival of settlers, the surfing fashion and the evolution of swimsuits in history, young and old will move from one surprise to another. If you’re lucky you may also be able to visit a replica of Captain Cook’s Endeavour, if it happens to be in Sydney, or the submarine HMAS Onslow, or the destroyer Vampire built in 1959.

Powerhouse Museum
The children’s favourite! But the Museum of Science and Design is a great adventure for everyone, with heaps of interaction for the whole family! Throughout its halls you’ll discover musical instruments, the basic structures of language, the history of computers, the conquest of space…and much more. Don’t miss the first steam engine, dating back to 1854, before the museum’s high point: climbing on board a space shuttle!

The Australian Museum
The Australian Museum was the first museum ever created in Australia. It’s a fascinating place with surprises for the whole family to discover. Thrill as you enter the skeleton gallery or when you examine – at close range – the deadliest spiders in the world. Then gasp at Welcome Stranger, the biggest gold nugget ever found in Australia, or the dazzling colours of the superb butterfly collection. On the last floor, a special children’s area introduces youngsters to Australia’s amazing animals.

The Orbit
A very pleasant spot to enjoy a cocktail with the family is the bar of The Orbit. Located on the 47th floor of Australia Square Tower, you’ll have a superb view of Sydney. On the same floor is The Summit, a classy restaurant which rotates on its axis while you’re eating!

Zoos, aquariums, parks and gardens

Taronga Zoo
Located in beautiful Taronga Park, the zoo, which houses over 5,000 animals, is sure to prove a success with any family visiting Sydney. You’ll marvel at the local species such as koalas, kangaroos, duck-billed platypuses and wombats – but also at the pygmy hippos, white tigers and red pandas! The great classics such as elephants, monkeys and giraffes, are also here, and always popular with children. Take our advice: take the cable car up to the upper entrance of the park and zoo – the views of the city are superb!

Royal Botanic Gardens
Sydney has many parks, all perfect for a pleasant rest. The Royal Botanic Gardens, located right in the middle of the city with a superb view of the sea, is a real paradise. It’s one of the most enchanting places in Sydney for walks or picnics with the family. Plus children will be delighted at the abundant wildlife here, especially the ibises and the white cockatoos with their yellow crests.

Sydney Aquarium
The most visited place in the city, the Aquarium has three giant tanks. See the sea-lions, then prepare the family for thrills as they enter the tunnel and end up surrounded by sharks. There’s more magic with the fantastic colours of the Great Coral Reef fish – and the more daring can go and visit the Australian crocodiles. A marine adventure not to be missed!
